The Sleeper Awakens

Since the birth of our self-reflection, man has pondered the question of our existence, asking himself what is reality?
Is it a thing or an object as we know it?
Perhaps it is just a concept, an idea?
The definition I expect, would surely lay in the building blocks our time space experience. If space is a thing, if time truly does have an arrow then reality must exist within some kind of Newtonianesqe construct. If they do not, then reality is just information; to be precise how much of the concept we can become aware of. We may define this awareness as consciousness, not a thing or place but in effect an understanding.

To quantify this model we need toexamine the fabric of our universe as we know it and determine its fundamental nature. Physics explored on this scale is referred to as quantum as it obeys a very peculiar set of laws which are counterintuitive to our waking experience.
The experiment at the very heart of the controversy, the double slit experiment, tells us that in every event at this level, all possibilities of the outcome occur simultaneously but it is what the conscious observer witnesses that ultimately constitutes “reality”

If we look at this model of reality we now may begin to mathematically consider our reality as being awareness in every possible direction which may be expressed as ^r3xA where A=Awareness
This is the volumetric measurement of a sphere of awareness, our consciousness. Everything inside this sphere becomes our reality and everything outside
becomes the unconscious reality that we are only beginning to communicate with. At this periphery of consciousness lies the super possibility of reality as described by quantum mechanics.

As a scientist I have always found it important to engage subjects with a common language and likewise with our journey into the unconscious. Looking at our current state of consciousness and the very nature of our time space condition it is perhaps rather inevitable that we see events in a dualistic fashion; we contextualise through subject and object dynamics encoded by a binary type expression of things being either/or but never both. Erwin Schrodinger mocked the very notion of simultaneous possibilities in his infamous thought exercise involving a cat that was both alive and dead at the same time. It would seem nature is not without her sense of irony as we now have to bow to the notion that she may also be a he.

So if the nature of consciousness is not binary nor is it dualistic then it must be quantum, exiting all possibilities at once. This model, I believe, is being harmonised by lucid dreamers who have to learn to carry their awareness in a kind of detached fashion of loose awareness rather than trying to impose our egotistical projections into the dream world which, as any of us experienced dreamers will tell you, will cause the dream to collapse. It would seem that dualistic projections do not harmonise with the infinite nature of the quantum consciousness.

Computer intelligence as we know it is currently steeping into its next evolutionary paradigm by abandoning binary processing to adopt a new wave of quantum engineering. Could quantum processing be a shift towards consciousness? For what is consciousness but information and a computer can hold vast quantities of information surely it might become conscious?

The human brain by comparison has 20 billion little computers called neurones, each one in contact with 100,000 others at the same time and each one firing off information over 100 times per minute. Perhaps then it is no wonder that this machine is aware of its own process, it is self-aware. The maths is crude but there is likely to be a threshold after which feedback mechanisms must inform each other of the other’s existence. Perhaps we are now connecting the neurones of the first artificial brain with our internet connections sharing information. The quantum processor
may prove to be the final link in the chain of events that allows information uploaded into the ethereal grid which will ultimately yield it to question its own purpose.

But what of social regard, our conscious decision making process, is this not what makes us human? The battle for primitive man to pass his genes on to the populous of today was won not with sticks and stones but, in fact, with words. It was social conduct; sharing information in communities which made homosapiens nature’s most successful competitor. It is our reason to reason, how and why we make choices. But what are these choices but an elegant framework of context formed through sharing common points of view on which information is layered to yield mutual mathematical expression.

Social networking is now fertilising the information of the machine creating social context, a frame of reference soon to be married to a processor so powerful that it may recognise itself. Could the sleeping giant of artificial intelligence slowly be awakening?
